The SPD lost in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the CDU is the winner. The Greens gain the most and replace the FDP as the third strongest party. The AfD made it into the Düsseldorf state parliament again, the left missed it much more clearly than five years ago. A closer look at voter migration shows how its composition came about.

According to surveys by Infratest Dimap, the CDU lost a total of 20,000 voters in this state election. The Christian Democrats owe the percentage increase to the significantly lower voter turnout (from 65.2 percent in 2017 to 56.0 percent now). The Christian Democrats won by far the most from the FDP (260,000), ahead of the SPD (30,000) and the AfD (20,000). They lost 190,000 votes to non-voters and 140,000 to the Greens. There was no exchange with the other parties.

Compared to the last state election in May 2017, the SPD lost a total of 520,000 voters. The majority, 310,000, went to non-voters and 260,000 to the Greens, and 30,000 also switched to the CDU. The Social Democrats won with 60,000 votes from the FDP and 20,000 from the other parties. There was no exchange with the AfD.

The Greens won a total of 630,000 new voters – and are the only party in North Rhine-Westphalia to get votes from all other parties. By far the most with 260,000 from the SPD, ahead of 140,000 from the CDU, 100,000 from the FDP, 90,000 from the other parties, 30,000 from non-voters and even 10,000 from the AfD.

In negative terms, the FDP is the counterpart to the Greens: it lost to all other parties – a total of 610,000 votes. With 260,000 most to the CDU, also 130,000 to non-voters, 100,000 to the Greens, 60,000 to the SPD, 40,000 to the other parties and 20,000 to the AfD.
