A quarter of a century ago, the sentence would have sounded like an advertisement for a vacancy at Team Telekom: “Enjoy the beautiful routes and sections of the Tour de France and conquer the summit of Mont Ventoux together with Jan.”

In the 90s, Jan Ullrich was one of the big stars of cycling and became a folk hero with his victory in the Tour de France exactly 25 years ago. The Bonn cycling team became a kind of national team.

The tempting offer, however, dates from 2022. It was formulated by Ullrich’s longtime friend Dirk Baldinger. The 50-year-old was German amateur champion on the road in 1994 and took part in the “Big Loop” twice himself.

Together with Ullrich, Baldinger has now organized a tour that is intended to help his friend, who has stumbled in life, get back on his feet financially and is based on his greatest triumph. The “Jan Ullrich Re:Tour22” means a step back to normality for the tour winner, who crashed after economic and health escapades.

Over the course of four days, Ullrich drives through Provence in the footsteps of the Tour de France and offers fans to accompany him. “As this is a cycling event, experience is required, but we expect a wide range of skills,” Baldinger said. The highlight of the trip, which takes place in September, will be the ascent to the legendary 1,900 meter summit of Mont Ventoux.

Like the 48-year-old, the mountain has lost none of its radiance and fascination. In any case, the demand was so great that the tour was quickly booked out. And that despite the price of 25,000 euros per person. As benefits, the fellow travelers receive five nights in a superior hotel, food and bicycles.

However, Ullrich’s tour is still significantly cheaper than the offer that Lance Armstrong made to his fans a few years ago. The German’s big rival had offered a comparable cycle tour on Mallorca and asked for around 35,000 euros.
