British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a vote of no confidence. The head of the responsible party committee, Graham Brady, announced that the necessary number of corresponding applications from Tory MPs had been reached. At least 54 Tories must apply in writing to the powerful party committee in 1922 to vote.

If Johnson loses the vote among the 359 Conservative MPs, he will be replaced as Conservative leader and prime minister. If he wins, he is guaranteed another challenge for a year.

Johnson had come under pressure from the “Partygate” affair about lockdown celebrations in his own party. His poll numbers are also bad. On Friday, Johnson was loudly booed when he arrived at the Thanksgiving Mass for Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign in London.

By-elections are also scheduled for June 23 in two constituencies previously held by the Conservatives. In both cases, the incumbent had to resign because of scandals. A poll commissioned by the Sunday Times newspaper predicts severe defeats for Johnson’s Conservative Party.
