According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, no permit is required for the return transport of the gas turbine for the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline from Canada via Germany to Russia. “Neither the import of the turbine from Canada to Germany nor the onward transport from Germany to Russia is covered by the EU sanctions,” said the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection at the request of WELT AM SONNTAG.
“The export of the turbine in question to Russia therefore does not require a permit within the meaning of Section 4 of the Foreign Trade and Payments Ordinance.” The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) informed Siemens Energy about this on request, according to the ministry.
The Russian state-owned company Gazprom had justified a reduction in gas deliveries to Germany with the lack of the gas turbine that had been serviced by Siemens Energy in Canada. At the request of Germany, the Canadian government exceptionally approved the export of the turbine.
“Even if, in our opinion, this is just an excuse from Russia for a continued interruption of gas supplies, we still have to do everything we can to withdraw this pretext from Russia,” the Federal Ministry of Economics said.
