Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on international Affairs Natalia Polonskaya appealed to the UN high Commissioner for human rights Michelle Bachelet. In her letter she urged them to condemn the criminal actions of the Ukrainian authorities unilaterally blocked the supply of fresh water to the Crimea and to take measures for the resumption of the Dnieper water supply in the North-Crimean channel.
the North Crimean canal, extending from the river Dnieper, is the main source of fresh water to Crimea. It provided 85 percent of the needs of people for clean drinking water. But after the reunification of the Crimea with Russia water flow through the channel in the Republic was completely stopped, reminds RIA Novosti.
Polonskaya urged the UN and the international community to take action to end the discriminatory policy of the Ukrainian authorities against the inhabitants of the Crimea, and Bachelet is to take all possible steps to prevent a repetition of the situation with a water blockade of the Peninsula in the future.
the Deputy emphasized that the Crimea is a unique multicultural region of the world. On its territory is home to 2.4 million people and 170 nationalities. While the Ukrainian authorities deliberately take actions that threaten a humanitarian disaster on the Peninsula.
As noted by Taylor, the water of the Dnieper river are international in nature and originate from the territory of Russia. This channel was built in the 50-ies of the last century due to the efforts and resources of Ukraine and the entire Soviet Union.
According to the Deputy, the overlap Ukraine channel in 2014 have already impacted state of the ecosystem of the Crimea and the lower Dnieper. The result is waterlogging and salinization, destruction of many species of flora and fauna of areas adjacent to the channel, deteriorating the soil fertility and quality indicators of the health of residents living in the region.
Poklonski stressed that such actions endanger the lives of millions of people, they canequate to repression. Ukraine’s actions not only violate the UN Charter contradict its purposes and principles, but aimed at the destruction of human rights. The Deputy noted that the residents of Crimea is prepared to provide detailed factual materials and expect a prompt response to the appeal.
