President of Ukraine urged to get rid of the language of the Ombudsman

Citizens of Ukraine has demanded from President Vladimir Zelensky to eliminate the position of Commissioner for the protection of the state language. The authors of the petition published on the website of the Ukrainian leader, justified this step as a violation of the Constitution, which contains in one part of the law “On ensuring the functioning of Ukrainian as the state language”. Zelensky will be obliged to consider the appeal, if it reaches 25 thousand signatures, writes TASS.

the text of the petition stated that the duty of protection of the state language, according to the Constitution, must fulfill Parliament Commissioner for human rights, not the government-appointed Ombudsman.

currently, the post of the Commissioner for the protection of the state language is Tatyana Monakhova, whose appointment was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on 27 November 2019.

the Law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state” obliges all officials of the country to speak and write in the Ukrainian language only in the performance of official duties. For violation of the law the guilty will be punished up to criminal prosecution.
