Telegram confirmed and explained the leak of user data

Telegram Wednesday found a violation of the privacy of its users. Before the Internet there was a database with nicknames and phone numbers of several million people.

the Portal “Code Durova” checked out part of the accounts and found a match. According to the portal, 30 percent contained in the database of phones owned by the Russians, and the rest of the Iranian users of Telegram.

As stated in the Telegram, data leakage of this format (the phone number is the user ID) is possible via the abuse of built-in function to import contacts when a user logs on. The company noted that none of the messenger cannot completely exclude the establishment of such bases of compliance, writes TASS.

Next to the Telegram assured that at least 60 percent of the leaked database is no longer relevant. “The additional measures taken by us in late summer of 2019 on appeals from Hong Kong, brought a successful result”, — explained in the company.

the Operator of the messenger reminded that users can use the option “Who can add me to your contacts by phone number”. Customization allows you to completely hide the connection between the account and phone number, although considerably complicates communication via Telegram for a normal user.

On the territory of Russia Telegram was blocked from April 2018. June 18, Roskomnadzor unblocked messenger in Russia, where they use about 30 million people.
