The shooter, who killed 19 children and two teachers in a Texas elementary school shooting, announced his crime on the social network Facebook shortly before, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott. About 30 minutes before the shooting at Robb Elementary School, the 18-year-old made a post and two more followed, Abbott said at a news conference in the small town of Uvalde on Wednesday.
In it he announced that he would shoot his grandmother, after which he explained that he had done so. Eventually he wrote that he was going to attack an elementary school. The 18-year-old used an AR-15 rifle. There are no known criminal records and no history of mental illness.
The governor also announced that the gunman shot his grandmother in the face – she survived with serious injuries and called the police.
A scandal broke out at the press conference. Democratic nominee for governor Beto O’Rourke interrupted the speech. “You’re doing nothing, you’re all doing nothing,” O’Rourke said.
“You’re going too far,” accused Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, who stood behind Governor Abbott. He described the Democrats as a “bastard” who wanted to turn the attack into a political issue. Senator Ted Cruz repeatedly asked O’Rourke to sit down. Finally O’Rourke was led out of the room.
The 18-year-old, himself a student, shot 19 children and two adults in a classroom on Tuesday. He was shot dead by a border guard. 17 people were injured.
