The number of corona cases in Germany reported to the RKI yesterday was 48,502.

Compared to the previous week, there was an increase of 22 percent.

This is the second week-on-week rise after 35 straight declines.

The 7-day average of new corona cases rises to more than 30,000 – for the first time in a week.

The nationwide 7-day corona incidence increases again, from 207 to 221.

It’s the first time she’s climbed three days in a row since mid-April.

The incidence is increasing in 14 of the 16 federal states.

Rhineland-Palatinate is now more than 200 again and Hesse is more than 300.

The incidence only falls in Bremen and Hamburg.

131 corona deaths were reported to the RKI yesterday, five less than a week earlier.

The 7-day moving average drops to 63, the lowest level since October 21, 2021.

In the entire month of May, 1.416 million corona vaccinations were registered in Germany.

That is less than what was reported in one day in spring 2021, around May 14, 2021.

As in April, the number of vaccinations in May fell by around 40 percent compared to the previous month from an already significantly reduced level.

Hardly anything is happening, particularly with the initial vaccinations.

Only around 40,000 initial vaccinations were added in May – with almost 19 million unvaccinated people in Germany.

Accordingly, the vaccination rate in May rose only minimally, by 0.06 percentage points.

It is now at 77.7 percent.

For comparison: At Christmas 2021, Olaf Scholz had it declared that the vaccination rate should be increased by six percentage points by the end of January, from 74.0 percent at the time to 80 percent

Even after five months, only half of the distance has been covered. And at the current pace, it would be more than three years before the 80 percent mark would be reached.

Every day we hear the new Corona case numbers. But what do they mean, where are we in the pandemic and what is the trend? Olaf Gersemann explains and evaluates the current figures briefly and concisely – every morning anew.
