Before the start of the G-7 summit in Bavaria, US President Joe Biden has arrived in Germany for his first visit since taking office. Air Force One with the President on board landed in Munich late Saturday evening. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder received Biden at the airport.

He then boarded the Marine One helicopter for the short flight to the summit site of Schloss Elmau. This is where the summit of the seven leading western industrialized countries begins this Sunday. Before that, Biden wants to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz for bilateral talks. The G-7 top meeting in Bavaria lasts until Tuesday.

For Biden, it is the first visit to Germany since he was sworn in as president in January 2021. Germany currently chairs the “Group of Seven”. In addition to Germany and the USA, the G 7 also includes Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan. After the G-7 meeting, Biden plans to travel to the NATO summit in Madrid before returning to Washington on Thursday.

Before Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron had already landed in Munich with his wife Brigitte. They were also received by Söder.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and its consequences will be at the center of the summit meetings of the G7 and NATO. Only last Thursday, the United States announced further arms deliveries to Ukraine in the amount of 450 million dollars (about 428 million euros). Since the start of the war four months ago, the US government has said it has pledged or already delivered weapons and equipment worth around 6.1 billion US dollars (5.8 billion euros) to Ukraine.
