FNPP will be able to work in conditions of permafrost as much as 40 years

a Historic event for the global nuclear industry. In the Chukotka town of Pevek commissioned first in the world floating nuclear power plant “Akademik Lomonosov”. The project is Rosenergoatom concern. In the future floating APEC will become the main source of electricity in the region. And places on the world map where this technology is extremely popular, many.

Floating electrical and thermal station could be a boon for remote regions not only Russia but the entire world, this unique peaceful atom is no longer anywhere on the planet. And territories, where the energy is vital, as there’s still plenty of time.

the world’s Only and the northernmost on the planet — Chukotka officially launched floating nuclear power plant. First sketches of the future floating unit appeared in 1993, after 5 years started developing technical documentation, and in 2009 at the Baltic shipyard in St. Petersburg was laid this unique station.

the Shooting last spring when above idle reactor reporters still could be. We then managed to get into the Holy of holies “Academician Lomonosov”.

One of the most closed areas of FNPP “Academician Lomonosov” — the complex of overloading rods for nuclear reactors, which is under these covers at a depth of about 10 meters. It will produce electrical energy through peaceful nuclear energy.

the basis of the floating power unit are taken as the reactor plants of icebreakers — they even look similar, but only on the outside. Inside – all that has no analogues. Under the station has developed a unique hardware and special software.

Particular emphasis is placed on the internal protection is made according to the most modern standards: a complicated maze of corridors and rooms, and access to each compartment is opened by fingerprint and secret code. The station meets all international standards of the IAEA on the use of nuclear energy.

At a relatively modest -144 meters in length, 30 in width and 15 in height – “Akademik Lomonosov” is capable of producing up to 70 MW of electricity and 50 Gcal/h of thermal energy. This will be enough for a city with a population of about 100 thousand people. In addition, the base station can create a powerful desalination plant — it can give up to 240 thousand cubic meters of fresh water per day.

In the most Northern city of Russia Pevek floating nuclear power station was dispatched from Murmansk in late August last year. With the help of an icebreaker she has done almost 5 thousand kilometers along the Northern sea route — through the four seas, to bypass the New Land — fall and moored to the coast of Chukotka. And now the “Akademik Lomonosov” should replace the old coal plants, which worked here already since 1942!

the work of the NPP will allow to develop local businesses and increase the number of jobs. The main advantage of such a station — savings on fuel delivery. On floating it will change every 3-5 years. And the station itself in the permafrost will be able to work for four decades.
