Apple decided not to implement end-to-end encryption of data in iCloud

Apple, presumably, decided not to implement end-to-end encryption of backup data (photos, contacts, calendars, documents etc.) stored in iCloud. This decision was taken because of pressure from the FBI, according to Reuters.

According to the Agency, the firm’s CEO Tim cook had the idea of full encryption of iCloud backups in 2018, but backed down after negotiations with the US secret services. The decision was influenced by the prolonged litigation with the FBI in 2016: Apple refused to crack iPhone the terrorist who opened fire in San Bernardino, and did not want to embed backdoors in iOS.

the company has expressed fears that if the mechanism to bypass system security will be established, the authorities will go further and will require development of code for call recording, access to camera and monitor the location of the owner. As a result, the FBI had to ask for help on the side.

According to the source Reuters, Apple declined the encryption of iCloud backups, because they do not want to go to a new conflict. “They decided that they will no longer stick to poke a bear,” said the source.

Commenting on the news, the head of Telegram Pavel Durov again missed no opportunity to criticize WhatsApp. “iCloud has officially become a tool for surveillance, – he wrote. Applications that rely on it to store your personal messages (like WhatsApp) is part of the problem”.
